The Miami Marlins defeated the New York Mets 4-2 on Tuesday night, despite managing only three hits.
Sandy Alcantara secured his first victory in 19 months with a strong performance on the mound.
Alcantara, who missed the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery, threw five solid innings, allowing two runs and four hits while striking out four.
This victory marked his first since September 3, 2023, and came after he received a no-decision in his season debut on March 27.
Graham Pauley played a pivotal role, hitting a two-run double in the fourth inning to give the Marlins a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Kyle Stowers also contributed with a two-run homer in the first inning, providing an early advantage for Miami.
Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor made his return after missing Monday’s game following the birth of his son.
Lindor had an RBI single in the third inning to tie the game at 2-2 but also committed two errors in the field.
Ronny Henriquez relieved Alcantara in the sixth and tossed two scoreless innings, maintaining the Marlins' slim lead.
Lake Bachar followed with a perfect eighth inning, further stifling any Mets comeback hopes.
New York threatened in the ninth after a leadoff walk to Juan Soto, issued by Marlins reliever Anthony Veneziano.
Pete Alonso reached base on a fielder’s choice, moving Soto to second, and Brandon Nimmo singled to put runners at the corners.
However, Anthony Bender came in to close, retiring Mark Vientos on a flyout and Jesse Winker on a groundout, earning his first save of the season.
Lindor’s third-inning RBI single helped snap an 0-for-12 slump to start the year but wasn’t enough to get the Mets over the hump.
The Marlins took an early 2-0 lead thanks to Stowers' two-run homer in the first off Mets starter Kodai Senga.
The Mets responded quickly in the second inning, as Nimmo homered for the second consecutive day to cut the deficit to one.
Senga (0-1) struggled in his 2025 debut, allowing four runs (two earned) and three hits in five innings.
He struck out eight and walked one after being limited to just one start last season due to injuries.
A key play in the game came in the fourth inning when Griffin Conine hustled out a grounder to avoid an inning-ending double play.
Pauley followed by delivering a two-out drive to left-center, scoring Jonah Bride and Conine with the go-ahead runs.
With the win, the Marlins secured a winning homestand after taking three of four games against Pittsburgh to start the season.
The Mets will look to bounce back with Clay Holmes (0-1, 3.86 ERA) starting the series finale on Wednesday, facing the Marlins' Connor Gillispie (0-1, 5.40 ERA).
