Dane Myers delivered a clutch RBI single in the 12th inning, driving in Otto Lopez to give the Miami Marlins a 5-4 walk-off victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night.
This victory marked the Marlins’ second walk-off win in just three days.
Myers had already made a crucial defensive play in the top of the 12th, throwing out Tommy Pham at home from right field to keep the game tied.
Then, in the bottom of the inning, Myers came through at the plate, delivering an opposite-field drive to right-center off Tim Mayza to score Lopez and secure the win.
The Marlins' offense was paced by Myers, along with Kyle Stowers and Lopez, who each had three hits on the night. Derek Hill also added two hits.
On the mound, George Soriano (1-0) got the win despite giving up two hits in the 12th inning.
The Pirates' Bryan Reynolds recorded two hits, but Pittsburgh’s chances faded as they couldn’t capitalize on a crucial error.
Joey Wentz (0-1), who pitched two innings of relief, left the game in the 12th after intentionally walking Lopez to begin the inning.
Oneil Cruz then misplayed a fly ball by Jonah Bride near the wall in right-center, loading the bases for the Marlins.
Xavier Edwards was forced out at home plate, setting up Myers for the game-winning hit.
The game had been tied at 3 after seven innings, with both teams scoring in the 11th inning, forcing extra innings.
A key defensive play came in the eighth inning when Griffin Conine, pinch-hitting in the seventh, robbed Jack Suwinski of a potential home run.
Conine leaped high above the wall in left field to bring the ball back into the park, preserving the tie and preventing the Pirates from taking the lead.
Miami continued to show resilience in the late innings, adding two more runs in extra innings after scoring five runs in the eighth and ninth innings in their first two games.
However, a troubling trend for the Marlins emerged, as they’ve allowed 14 stolen bases in just three games, including six on Saturday.
The Marlins will look to take the season-opening series with a win on Sunday, as Andrew Heaney makes his debut for the Pirates while Max Meyer starts for Miami in the series finale.
