The Miami Marlins fell to the New York Mets 10-4 on Monday night, marking a tough start to their three-game series.
Pete Alonso played a key role for the Mets, hitting a grand slam that highlighted a seven-run fifth inning.
The Marlins had a brief lead early in the game when Otto López hit a solo homer in the first.
However, the Mets quickly responded with Starling Marte’s home run in the third to tie the game.
Luis Torrens and Brandon Nimmo also added their own home runs, contributing to a dominant offensive performance from New York.
Every Mets player on the lineup recorded at least one hit, finishing with a total of 11 hits on the night.
Marlins starting pitcher Cal Quantrill struggled in his debut, allowing six runs and eight hits over four-plus innings.
His performance was capped off by Alonso’s grand slam, which chased him from the mound.
Alonso’s grand slam came after he fouled off two consecutive sinkers, then drove the next pitch 400 feet over the right-center field wall.
Marlins relief pitcher George Soriano also had a tough outing, surrendering a two-run shot to Torrens, pushing the Mets’ lead to 8-1.
Marlins’ pitcher Quantrill, who signed a one-year deal with the team in February, took the loss in the game.
David Peterson, the Mets’ left-hander, earned the win after giving up just two runs and five hits in six innings.
Peterson struck out nine and walked three, showing strong control throughout his outing.
The Marlins did manage to score two runs in the ninth, ending the Mets’ bullpen’s impressive stretch of 11 2/3 scoreless innings to start the season.
Brandon Nimmo’s two-run homer in the sixth inning was another highlight for the Mets, as it tied his personal best for home runs at a single road ballpark.
Marlins fans will be hoping for a better performance as the series continues, with the Mets set to face Sandy Alcántara in the next game.
