The Miami Marlins suffered their first loss of the season on Friday night, falling 4-3 to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The game was marked by defensive mistakes and missed opportunities with runners in scoring position, as the Marlins committed four fielding errors.

Right-hander Connor Gillispie made his first major league start, and while he was solid through the first three innings, he was undone by sloppy play behind him as the game went on.

In the fourth inning, Oneil Cruz walked to lead off the inning, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error by Rule-5 pick Liam Hicks, who was making his Major League debut as catcher.

Cruz then scored on an RBI double from Andrew McCutchen, putting the Pirates up 1-0.

The Pirates extended their lead in the same inning when Adam Frazier hit a sacrifice fly to shallow right, which allowed another run to score after a fielding miscue from first baseman Matt Mervis.

In the fifth inning, Cruz capitalized on another mistake, as Tommy Pham reached base on an error, and Cruz followed up with a two-run home run that gave Pittsburgh a 4-0 lead.

Gillispie finished his outing after five innings, allowing four hits, four runs (three earned), and four walks while striking out four.

The Marlins finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Graham Pauley hit an RBI double to make it 4-1.

Miami’s offense struggled to generate more offense until the ninth inning when Otto Lopez hit a two-run home run off Pirates closer David Bednar to bring the Marlins within one run, but the rally fell short.

Pittsburgh's starter Mitch Keller was dominant through six innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five.

Despite the late surge, the Marlins were unable to tie the game, and they ended the night with a 4-3 defeat.

Gillispie’s performance and the Marlins’ defensive errors were key factors in the loss.

Looking ahead, the Marlins will hope to bounce back in the next game of the series as right-hander Valente Bellozo will take the mound against Pittsburgh’s Bailey Falter.
