The New York Yankees have made a splash in free agency by signing left-handed pitcher Max Fried to a record-breaking, eight-year, $218 million contract.

This deal, which represents the largest ever issued to a left-handed pitcher and the fourth largest for any pitcher in MLB history, solidifies the Yankees’ commitment to bolstering their pitching staff for years to come.

Fried, 30, was formally introduced at a news conference at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, December 18, just eight days after agreeing to terms with the team.

The announcement marks the beginning of a new chapter in the pitcher’s career, as he steps into a leadership role in the Yankees' rotation, joining ace Gerrit Cole at the front of their staff.

Fried, a key figure in the Atlanta Braves’ pitching staff, brings with him a wealth of postseason experience, including a World Series title in 2021.

Over the course of his career, Fried has established himself as one of the most consistent and dominant pitchers in Major League Baseball.

In 2024, he posted an 11-10 record with a 3.25 ERA in 29 starts, compiling 166 strikeouts over 174 1/3 innings.

Fried also tied the league record with two complete games and one shutout, further emphasizing his capability to dominate in high-pressure situations.

One of Fried’s standout statistical categories is his ability to induce ground balls, ranking second in the MLB with a 59% ground-ball rate, and first in the National League.

Additionally, his opponents’ slugging percentage of .315 led all NL pitchers, showcasing his ability to limit hard contact.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone recalled facing Fried in a 2020 game against the Braves, where Fried silenced the Yankees’ offense with a brilliant outing.

“He’s just got a lot of ways to beat you,” Boone said. “This is a guy that is tenacious between the lines.”

Fried’s decision to join the Yankees was heavily influenced by the team’s championship pedigree and consistent drive to compete at the highest level.

“Every single year the Yankees come to Spring Training, the number one goal is to win a World Series, to get to the playoffs,” Fried said. “It’s not to do anything besides hold up the trophy at the end of the year.”

His desire to be part of a perennial contender aligns perfectly with the Yankees' mission to return to championship glory.

The Yankees envision Fried as a formidable No. 2 starter behind Gerrit Cole.

Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake sees room for growth in Fried’s already impressive arsenal, noting that the team's analytical approach could help refine his seven-pitch repertoire even further.

Blake also projected that Fried could pitch 175-180 innings in 2024, depending on his health.

Fried’s bond with the Yankees was formed early in the free agency process, with a successful 90-minute Zoom meeting with team executives helping solidify his decision to sign.

“When the Yankees say that they’re interested in you, you perk up and you listen,” Fried said.

His enthusiasm for joining the franchise was evident when he first put on a Yankees jersey.

“I’m going to leave everything out there and compete to the best of my abilities,” Fried noted.

The Yankees’ storied history and the opportunity to pitch in the bright lights of Yankee Stadium were key factors in his decision.

“It’s one of the most storied, winning franchises in sports," said Fried. "I want to be able to do my part in adding to that."

Fried’s transition to the American League East will be an exciting challenge, but his track record against divisional foes bodes well for his future in pinstripes.

“What I like about him is, he’s been able to add and change his arsenal, or allow his arsenal to evolve over the years,” Boone remarked. “I think that’s going to be something that really serves him well in the long term.”

In 10 career starts against AL East teams — including the Blue Jays, Orioles, Rays, and Red Sox — Fried has posted a 2.23 ERA with a 7-2 record over 62 2/3 innings.

With his combination of skill, experience, and mentality, Fried is poised to be a cornerstone of the Yankees' pitching staff for the next eight years.

As the Yankees embark on their next chapter with Fried, the goals remain the same: prepare, compete, and win.

For Max Fried, those words will be his mantra as he joins one of the most storied franchises in baseball history.
