The New York Yankees suffered their first loss of the season on Tuesday night, falling to the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-5.
This defeat came after a high-scoring sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend, where the Yankees had dominated offensively.
Despite a strong start, the Yankees couldn't hold onto a late lead as the Diamondbacks erupted for five runs in the eighth inning.
Arizona's rally began with a clutch RBI single from Geraldo Perdomo, followed by two walks that loaded the bases.
Mark Leiter Jr. was one pitch away from escaping the jam, but with two outs, Eugenio Suárez delivered a game-changing grand slam.
Suárez’s sixth career grand slam cleared the left-field seats, giving the Diamondbacks a 7-4 lead.
The Yankees had initially taken a 4-2 lead, with Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe both hitting solo home runs off Arizona starter Corbin Burnes.
Burnes, making his debut after signing a $210 million deal with the Diamondbacks in December, allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits.
The 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner struck out eight and tossed 98 pitches in 4 1/3 innings of work.
New York starter Will Warren kept the Yankees in the game, pitching five innings, allowing two runs, and striking out four batters.
Shelby Miller earned the win for Arizona after pitching a hitless seventh inning, while A.J. Puk sealed the victory with his first save of the season.
Despite a strong offensive start, the Yankees’ pitching could not prevent the late surge from Arizona.
For Suárez, the grand slam was another highlight to an already impressive season, as he now has five home runs in his first five games.
Looking ahead, the Yankees will need to bounce back in the series finale on Wednesday.
They will send left-hander Carlos Rodón to the mound, facing Arizona’s Zac Gallen, who has dominated the Yankees in past outings.
