Aaron Judge had a historic performance in the New York Yankees' 20-9 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday.
Judge combined with Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger to hit home runs on the first three pitches from Brewers' pitcher Nestor Cortes.
This marked the first time a team homered on its first three pitches since Major League Baseball began tracking pitch counts in 1988.
Judge hit a solo homer, his ninth career grand slam, and a two-run drive during the game.
It was his 40th multi-homer game and third with three homers in a single game.
Judge finished the day with a career-high eight RBIs.
He narrowly missed becoming the 19th player in MLB history to hit four home runs in a game when his fly ball in the sixth inning settled on the right-field warning track for a double.
In the eighth inning, Judge flied out against Jake Bauers, who was filling in as both an outfielder and first baseman.
Goldschmidt, Bellinger, and Judge’s first-inning home runs set the tone for the game.
Austin Wells, Anthony Volpe, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Oswald Peraza also added homes to the Yankees' power surge.
In total, the Yankees hit nine home runs, setting a new team record.
Cortes, who was traded from the Yankees to the Brewers in December, had a rough debut for his new team.
He allowed eight runs on six hits and five walks over just two innings of work.
Max Fried, who was making his Yankees debut after signing a $218 million, eight-year contract, also struggled on the mound.
Fried gave up six runs on seven hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.
New York committed five errors in the game, their most since May 29, 2018.
These miscues led to four unearned runs off Fried.
Yoendrys Gómez earned his first big league win by recording four outs in relief.
J.C. Escarra, a 29-year-old former Uber driver and substitute teacher, made his MLB debut for the Yankees.
He struck out as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning against Chad Patrick, who was also making his debut.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone provided an update on Giancarlo Stanton, revealing that the designated hitter had started taking dry swings despite being sidelined by pain in both elbows.
The Yankees’ offensive outburst marked the second time in franchise history that they had hit eight home runs in a game.
The previous occasions occurred against the Philadelphia Athletics on June 28, 1939, and against the Chicago White Sox on July 31, 2007.
The Yankees will turn to RHP Marcus Stroman and RHP Aaron Civale for Sunday’s series finale as both pitchers make their first starts of the series.
