The New York Yankees kicked off their season with a 4-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday, marking an exciting start to their campaign.

Austin Wells made history in the first inning, becoming the first catcher since 1900 to hit a leadoff home run on Opening Day.

His shot off Freddy Peralta barely cleared the right-field short porch, setting the tone for the game.

Anthony Volpe also got in on the action, hitting a home run of his own in the second inning to extend the Yankees’ lead.

Aaron Judge added an RBI single in the seventh, and Cody Bellinger drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, his first RBI as a Yankee.

On the mound, Carlos Rodón (1-0) stepped up in place of the injured Gerrit Cole and delivered a strong 5 2/3 innings.

Rodón allowed just one run and four hits, racking up 13 swing-and-misses, including nine on his devastating slider.

Milwaukee’s only run off Rodón came in the third when Vinny Capra hit his first big league home run.

The Brewers had their chances but couldn’t capitalize.

In the sixth, rookie Isaac Collins faced Tim Hill with the bases loaded and two outs, only to ground into an inning-ending forceout.

The game was a tense one in the ninth, as Brewers closer Devin Williams loaded the bases with no outs.

But he allowed just one run, a sacrifice fly by Brice Turang, before striking out Jackson Chourio and Christian Yelich to seal the Yankees’ victory.

Chourio had a rough day at the plate, striking out five times, two more than his previous career high.

Before the game, the Yankees honored the memory of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former outfielder Brett Gardner, who tragically passed away last week.

Milwaukee also wore a patch in tribute to the late Bob Uecker, their legendary broadcaster who passed away in January.

Up next, Max Fried is making his Yankees debut on Saturday, while Nestor Cortes will be pitching for the Brewers in his return to New York.
