The Philadelphia Phillies were unable to complete a season-opening sweep, falling 5-1 to the Washington Nationals on Sunday.
Despite winning two of the first three games, the Phillies struggled in the series finale, with key injuries and a lack of offensive momentum hindering their efforts.
Aaron Nola, who had pitched well in his season debut, started the game hoping to help secure the sweep.
However, Nola allowed two key home runs that put the Nationals in control.
Josh Bell hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning, sending a fastball from Nola deep into center field.
In the sixth, Nathaniel Lowe followed up with a two-run homer, ending Nola’s day and extending Washington’s lead to 5-1.
Nola finished with five runs allowed on six hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out eight batters.
The Phillies’ offense struggled to generate any real momentum throughout the game.
Key players like catcher J.T. Realmuto (bruised foot) and shortstop Trea Turner (back spasms) were absent, weakening the lineup.
Realmuto had fouled a ball off himself in Saturday’s game and was forced out in the seventh inning, while Turner missed his second consecutive game.
Without these key players, the offense couldn’t keep up with Washington’s power hitting.
Nationals’ starter Mitchell Parker (1-0) allowed two runners on base in each of the first three innings but escaped every time.
He then pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing seven hits and striking out five.
In the ninth, reliever Kyle Finnegan entered with the bases loaded and no outs, allowing one run but ultimately securing the win and his first save by retiring the next two batters.
The Phillies struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities, finishing 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
In the seventh, with the bases loaded, reliever Jose A. Ferrer induced a double play from Alec Bohm, squashing any hopes of a serious comeback.
Paul DeJong, who had three hits for Washington, was a key contributor to the Nationals’ offensive attack.
With the loss, the Phillies won two of three games in Washington, a strong start to their season despite the final-game setback.
Heading into their home opener on Monday, the Phillies will need to find their offensive rhythm, especially with Realmuto and Turner expected to return soon.
They’ll face the Colorado Rockies in the next series, with left-hander Cristopher Sánchez (11-9, 3.32 ERA in 2024) on the mound.
