The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-1 on Wednesday night, showcasing a well-rounded effort led by Trea Turner, Edmundo Sosa, and a dominant performance on the mound from Zack Wheeler.
Trea Turner made his highly anticipated return to the Phillies' starting lineup after missing two games due to lower back spasms.
Back in his usual leadoff spot, Turner wasted no time making an impact, going 3-for-5 with a key RBI single in the seventh inning to help extend the Phillies' lead.
Turner had entered as a pinch hitter in the Phillies' home opener on Monday but looked sharp in his first start since his injury, helping to anchor the top of the lineup.
His bat has been a crucial part of the Phillies' success, and his return to full health was a welcome sight for the team.
Edmundo Sosa, who had filled in for Turner at shortstop, continued his strong start to the season.
Starting at second base on Wednesday, Sosa went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, extending his streak of at least two hits in every game he’s played this year.
Kyle Schwarber also played a key role in the win, continuing his consistent offensive presence.
Schwarber hit a run-scoring double and later scored on an RBI groundout by J.T. Realmuto.
Schwarber has now recorded at least one hit in every game this season, showing his ability to consistently get on base and create scoring opportunities.
His offensive contributions, along with those of Turner and Sosa, helped the Phillies build a comfortable lead.
On the mound, Zack Wheeler (1-0) delivered a dominant outing, striking out 10 batters in seven innings.
Wheeler allowed just one run and three hits, demonstrating his ability to overpower hitters with his fastball and slider.
The right-hander reached double digits in strikeouts for the 26th time in his career, including three strikeouts in the seventh inning to finish strong.
Wheeler’s performance also extended his remarkable streak to 13 consecutive starts in which he’s pitched at least six innings and allowed two or fewer runs—the longest active streak in Major League Baseball.
In fact, Wheeler became the 20th pitcher in MLB history to achieve such a feat, solidifying his place among the game's elite pitchers.
The Rockies' starter, Kyle Freeland (0-1), struggled to keep the Phillies’ offense in check, giving up three runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Despite a solid outing, Freeland was undone by a few key hits and a strong offensive attack from the Phillies.
Hunter Goodman did provide a bright spot for the Rockies, hitting a solo home run off Wheeler in the seventh inning.
Goodman’s homer was his second consecutive game with a long ball, showing that he has been a consistent threat in the lineup early in the season.
The key moment in the game came in the eighth inning, when the Rockies had a chance to rally.
With two runners on base, Phillies reliever Matt Strahm entered the game and struck out Ezequiel Tovar with an 80 mph slider.
This clutch strikeout preserved the Phillies’ two-run lead and halted any hopes of a comeback for Colorado.
Strahm's ability to execute in high-leverage situations has been a key part of the Phillies' bullpen success early in the season.
The Phillies’ 5-1 victory set them up nicely to finish off the three-game series with a potential sweep on Thursday.
Looking ahead to the finale, Antonio Senzatela will take the mound for the Rockies, while Taijuan Walker will make his season debut for the Phillies.
