The Gators extended their undefeated streak to 8-0 on Tuesday night, rallying to a 6-1 comeback victory over Stetson at Melching Field at Conrad Park.
The Gators scored all six of their runs in the final four innings, proving once again that resilience is a key component of their early-season success.
Florida's offense, which had been kept silent through the first five innings, came alive late, led by first-year player Blake Cyr.
Cyr, who had struggled at the plate earlier in the game, broke up Stetson’s no-hit bid with a double in the fifth inning.
He would later provide the game-winning moment, blasting a solo home run in the seventh to put the Gators ahead 2-1.
Cade Kurland also played a pivotal role in Florida’s late-game surge.
The sophomore, who has been in great form lately, hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to expand the Gators’ lead to 5-1.
“The three-run homer by Cade was huge for us, and then Blake hitting a home run to give us the lead 2-1.” O’Sullivan said.
While the Gators' offense finally broke through in the late innings, the real story of the game may have been the pitching staff's dominant performance.
Starter Billy Barlow set the tone with four solid innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out four.
The bullpen took over from there, with freshman Aidan King earning his first collegiate victory after delivering three no-hit innings of relief.
“I think you gotta give credit to our pitchers, they were pretty good,” O’Sullivan praised the trio of Barlow, King, and Alex Philpott, who closed the game with two scoreless innings.
King’s performance was particularly impressive.
The freshman struck out four batters and did not walk a single hitter during his three-inning stint.
Stetson, on the other hand, struck first with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, but the Hatters were unable to hold onto the lead.
Despite a challenge in the seventh when Stetson appeared to tie the game, an inning-ending review negated the run, allowing Florida to maintain its slim lead.
Offensively, Florida’s approach was patient, with a remarkable 10 strikeouts but also a keen eye for drawing walks.
The Gators have now struck out 10 batters in each of their last two games, and their pitchers have maintained an outstanding 7-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio over the season’s first eight games.
As the Gators look to build on their success, O’Sullivan was quick to note the significance of the win against a strong Stetson team.
“It was a really good win over a really good Stetson team,” O’Sullivan said. “I think they are picked to win their conference, so we knew coming down here it was going to be a difficult game.”
The victory also marked Florida's longest winning streak since the 2023 postseason, and their 8-0 start is the best since 2020.
Looking ahead, the Gators will face the North Florida Ospreys on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.
In-state rival Miami will come to Gainesville in a three-game series this weekend, from Friday, Feb. 28 to Sunday, Mar. 2. The opening game is set for Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
