Florida delivered a complete team effort Thursday night, riding an explosive first inning and strong contributions throughout the lineup to an 11-2 rout of Missouri at Condron Family Ballpark.
The Gators came out swinging, scoring six runs in the opening frame, their highest total in a first inning this season, and never looked back.
Brendan Lawson got things started with an RBI single, then Florida broke the inning wide open with back-to-back home runs from Luke Heyman and Blake Cyr.
Heyman’s three-run blast was followed immediately by Cyr’s solo shot to left, setting the tone for a dominant night at the plate.
Hayden Yost later scored on a wild pitch after a double by Ashton Wilson to cap the early outburst.
The early momentum gave starting pitcher Liam Peterson plenty of breathing room.
The sophomore right-hander went five innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out seven.
He now holds a 5-1 record in six home starts, sporting a 2.01 ERA and .200 opponent batting average at Condron Family Ballpark.
Peterson faced trouble in the third when Missouri pushed across two runs and loaded the bases, but he responded with back-to-back strikeouts to preserve the lead.
Offensively, it was far from a one-man show.
Colby Shelton continued his standout campaign with a 2-for-3 night, highlighted by a two-run double off the right-field wall in the seventh.
It marked his SEC-leading 16th double and his 19th multi-hit game of the season.
Shelton has now reached base safely in 35 of Florida’s 36 games.
Bobby Boser also chipped in with a 2-for-3 performance and extended his on-base streak to 16 games.
Wilson added two hits of his own, as nine different Gators recorded at least one hit.
Heyman finished with four RBI and raised his SEC batting average to .396, while slashing .396/.463/.792 in conference play.
He’s gone 17-for-34 (.500) over Florida’s last nine games with four homers and three doubles in that stretch.
The Gators didn’t let up after their big first inning.
Heyman knocked in another run in the fourth, and Landon Stripling added a two-out, two-run pinch-hit single to stretch the lead to 9-2.
Florida’s bullpen took it from there, locking down the final four innings with ease.
Caden McDonald, Billy Barlow, and Christian Rodriguez combined for four shutout frames, allowing just one hit.
Rodriguez slammed the door in the ninth, striking out three of the four batters he faced.
Missouri starter Brady Kehlenbrink was tagged with the loss after giving up six earned runs across three innings, dropping the Tigers to 12-21 overall and 0-13 in SEC play.
With the win, Florida improved to 22-14 and secured just its second conference victory of the season.
The Gators also extended their stronghold over Missouri, winning their 16th straight home game in the series.
Florida now owns a 20-1 record against Missouri at Condron Family Ballpark and a 32-8 mark all-time, including 27-7 under head coach Kevin O’Sullivan.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network+.
