In a tightly contested matchup at Condron Family Ballpark on Wednesday night, No. 7 Florida emerged victorious over Florida Atlantic, edging out the Owls 4-2.
The win improved the Gators' record to 12-2 and marked their fourth straight victory over FAU, extending their commanding lead in the all-time series to 28-10, including a solid 22-8 mark at home.
Florida’s pitching staff, led by starting pitcher Billy Barlow, set the tone early.
Barlow, making his first start for the Gators, threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one unearned run.
The right-hander was dominant, striking out five batters and walking only one, securing his first win in a Florida uniform.
His performance also made him the first Gators pitcher to toss at least five innings with no earned runs in a midweek game since Ryan Slater did so against FSU on April 11, 2023.
The Gators offense capitalized on Barlow’s stellar outing, starting with an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Bobby Boser worked a walk, and Colby Shelton doubled to left-center, bringing Boser across the plate.
Florida extended its advantage to 2-0 in the second inning when Hayden Yost's sacrifice fly scored Luke Heyman, who had walked and advanced to second base.
The Gators then gifted Barlow a third run in the fourth, as Blake Cyr swatted a solo home run to right field, his second of the season.
Although FAU managed to push across an unearned run in the sixth, Florida's pitching remained strong.
After Barlow allowed a leadoff double in the sixth, the Owls scored when Jake Milan grounded out to bring Danny Baez home.
The Owls' comeback efforts continued in the seventh, where a throwing error at second base allowed Nick Romano to score, pulling FAU within one run at 3-2.
But the Gators' pitching staff wasn’t done.
Closer Alex Philpott took over in the eighth and showcased his dominance.
After surrendering a leadoff single, Philpott struck out three consecutive batters, maintaining Florida’s fragile one-run lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Brody Donay gave the Gators some breathing room by launching his team-leading seventh home run of the season, a solo shot that extended the lead to 4-2.
Philpott, who earned his second save of the season, remained on the mound in the ninth.
He allowed a walk but responded with back-to-back strikeouts before getting pinch-hitter Patrick Ward to fly out, sealing the win.
Philpott finished the night with two shutout innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out five.
The Gators' victory was built on strong pitching, timely hitting, and solid defense.
At the plate, Colby Shelton and Ty Evans each had multiple hits, with Shelton going 2-for-4 and Evans 2-for-3.
Donay and Cyr each contributed a solo home run to the cause, with Cyr's blast coming in the fourth and Donay's in the eighth.
Florida's pitching staff was particularly impressive, as the Gators struck out 13 batters while walking only three in the 4-2 win.
The Gators also extended their streak of games with a home run to all 14 contests this season, demonstrating their offensive firepower.
Additionally, Cyr and Shelton both extended their streaks of reaching base in every game this season, highlighting their consistency at the plate.
Looking ahead, the Gators will now turn their attention to hosting Harvard in their final non-conference series of the season, set to begin Friday at 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network+.
