The No. 7 Florida Gators (16-5) faced off against the No. 2 Tennessee Volunteers (20-0) in a highly anticipated SEC opening series this past weekend at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Despite strong efforts from Florida’s pitchers and a couple of competitive frames, the Gators were swept by the Volunteers in three close games, with final scores of 5-3, 10-0, and 7-4.

The Gators were swept in an SEC opening series for the first time since 2017.

In the first game of the series on Friday night, the Gators and Volunteers engaged in a pitching duel between Florida’s Liam Peterson and Tennessee’s Liam Doyle.

Both pitchers kept the game scoreless through the opening innings.

Tennessee struck first in the second inning with a two-out RBI single from Jay Abernathy, bringing home Manny Marin.

Florida responded in the fourth inning when Blake Cyr hit a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1.

However, Tennessee took control in the fifth inning with a two-run double by Hunter Ensley, followed by a wild pitch that brought in a third run.

Despite a strong response from the Gators in the sixth, where Brody Donay delivered a two-run single to bring Florida within one, Tennessee added another run in the bottom half of the inning.

The Gators could not overcome the deficit, despite putting the tying run on base in the ninth.

Tennessee’s closer Nate Snead sealed the victory for the Volunteers with a strikeout, securing a 5-3 win.

Peterson (4-1) took his first loss of the season, while Tennessee’s Franklin (1-0) earned the win in a brief one-third inning of work.

Saturday’s game saw Florida’s freshman starter Aidan King impress in his SEC debut.

King pitched six innings of one-run ball, striking out six and allowing only four hits.

Unfortunately, the Gators' offense was stifled by Tennessee’s Marcus Phillips, who pitched seven shutout innings, striking out seven and allowing only five hits.

The lone run of the game came in the second inning when Tennessee’s Levi Clark scored on an RBI single by Manny Marin.

Florida’s bats could not capitalize on the few opportunities they had, and after King left the game, Tennessee erupted for nine runs in the seventh inning.

The game ended in a 10-0 shutout in seven innings.

King (3-1) was charged with the loss despite his strong outing, and Phillips (2-0) earned the win for Tennessee.

In the series finale on Sunday, the Gators took an early 4-1 lead in the fourth inning, with Ty Evans driving in two runs on a double down the left-field line.

However, Tennessee responded in the fourth, cutting the lead to 4-3 with a solo home run by Gavin Kilen.

In the sixth, Florida’s bullpen struggled as Billy Barlow allowed a two-run double by Cannon Peebles, giving Tennessee a 5-4 lead.

Florida’s pitchers held the Volunteers scoreless in the seventh, but Tennessee added two more runs in the eighth on a Reese Chapman two-run homer, extending their lead to 7-4.

Florida was unable to rally, and Tennessee secured the victory and the series sweep.

Barlow (1-1) was tagged with the loss, while Tennessee’s Dylan Loy (3-0) earned the win after three shutout innings of relief.

Florida is now 157-100 all-time against Tennessee, with a 69-52 record in Knoxville.

The Gators look to bounce back with midweek games against Jacksonville on Tuesday and Florida A&M on Wednesday, both scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at home.
