Florida came up just short against No. 23 Vanderbilt, falling 3-2 in game two of their series on Saturday afternoon at Condron Family Ballpark.
Despite the tough loss, the Gators were able to keep things close throughout the game.
For the second consecutive day, the teams were locked in a scoreless tie through the first two innings.
However, in the third, Vanderbilt broke the deadlock with a solo home run from Jonathan Vastine, putting the Commodores ahead 1-0.
Florida responded in the fifth inning when they finally broke through for a run.
After Landon Stripling walked, a two-out single from Hayden Yost set up Justin Nadeau to come through with an RBI single to left, cutting Vanderbilt's lead to 2-1.
This was a pivotal moment for the Gators, who had been struggling to score in the series.
The Gators' pitching staff, especially reliever Luke McNeillie, kept them in the game.
McNeillie pitched three shutout innings in relief, allowing no hits and striking out two.
His efforts were crucial in keeping Florida within striking distance.
It was in the seventh inning that the Gators managed to tie the game.
Nadeau and Bobby Boser started the inning with back-to-back singles, and a clutch RBI single by Luke Heyman knotted the score at 2-2.
Vanderbilt, however, wasn’t done.
In the top of the ninth, with two outs, Colin Barczi hit a solo home run to right field, regaining the lead for the Commodores at 3-2.
Florida had no answer in their final at-bats, and the game ended with Vanderbilt taking the win.
Despite the loss, Florida out-hit Vanderbilt 9-5, with Nadeau being the standout performer.
He went 2-for-5 with one run scored and an RBI.
It was also a tough day for Florida’s starting pitcher, Aidan King, who went five innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits.
He struck out five but did not factor into the decision.
Vanderbilt’s Alex Franzler (5-1) was credited with the win after tossing 2 2/3 innings of one-run ball, giving up three hits and one walk.
His fellow reliever, Connor Fennell, earned his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two batters.
Florida’s bullpen continued to show resilience with McNeillie’s performance, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the late surge from Vanderbilt.
In a rare moment, head coach Kevin O'Sullivan was ejected in the first inning, which added to the drama of the game.
Vanderbilt’s starter Cody Bowker went 4 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out seven, and played a key role in keeping the Gators' offense in check.
Notable performances from Florida included Shelton, who extended his streak of reaching base safely in 32 of 33 games this season.
Boser has now reached base safely in 13 consecutive games.
Florida's all-time record against Vanderbilt now stands at 148-84-1, including 84-26 at home.
With the loss, Florida’s record now stands at 20-13 overall and 1-10 in SEC play.
The Gators will look to avoid another SEC series sweep on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET, which will be broadcast on SEC Network.
