The No. 13 Florida Gators were outlasted in an intense back-and-forth series opener against No. 4 Georgia, falling 8-7 at Condron Family Ballpark on Friday night.

Both teams went back and forth with the lead, but in the end, the Bulldogs (22-2) emerged victorious, handing the Gators (18-6) their fourth straight loss in SEC play.

The game got off to an exciting start, with the Gators striking first in the bottom of the first inning.

After a leadoff walk to Justin Nadeau and a single by Bobby Boser, Colby Shelton blasted a three-run homer to right-center field, putting Florida up 3-0.

It was Shelton's third long ball of the season, and it gave the Gators an early advantage.

However, Georgia wasted no time in answering.

In the top of the second, the Bulldogs capitalized on a clutch three-run double by Devin Obee down the left-field line.

A throwing error on a subsequent single by Kolby Branch allowed Obee to come home, giving Georgia a 4-3 lead.

Florida quickly leveled the score in the third.

Boser, who had been on base earlier, crushed a solo home run to left-center field to make it 4-4.

That set the tone for an even tighter contest as the game unfolded.

In the fourth inning, Georgia retook the lead, 5-4, with an RBI groundout by Slate Alford that scored Christian Adams.

But once again, the Gators responded in kind.

Luke Heyman led off the bottom of the inning with his third home run of the season, a shot to left-center, tying the game at 5-5.

The game continued to shift back and forth, with Georgia regaining the lead in the seventh.

A sacrifice fly from Tre Phelps brought in the go-ahead run for the Bulldogs, putting them up 6-5.

Florida's bullpen, led by Luke McNeillie, kept the deficit manageable with three solid innings of relief, including a strikeout to end a jam in the fifth and another shutdown inning in the sixth.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Gators seemed poised for a dramatic comeback.

Brody Donay led off with a single, and Heyman tripled to center field to score him, tying the game.

Then, Hayden Yost delivered the go-ahead sacrifice fly to left-center, plating Heyman and giving Florida a 7-6 lead.

But Georgia wasn’t done.

In the top of the ninth, with Florida’s closer Alex Philpott on the mound, the Bulldogs made a final surge.

Alford reached base on an infield single, and Ryland Zaborowski followed with a two-run homer to left field, propelling Georgia to an 8-7 lead and ultimately sealing the victory.

The win went to Bulldogs reliever Jordan Stephens (3-0), who pitched one inning and allowed two earned runs.

Kolten Smith earned the save, securing the final three outs despite a pair of walks.

Florida’s Philpott (1-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up two earned runs in two innings of work.

Florida starter Aidan King, making his Friday night debut, pitched four-plus innings, surrendering five runs on six hits and two walks.

Despite his efforts, King didn’t factor into the decision.

Georgia’s Charlie Goldstein also didn’t earn a decision, as he lasted just 2 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs.

Boser’s performance at the plate stood out for Florida, as he went 2-for-5 with two runs, including his team-leading eighth home run of the season.

Heyman also contributed significantly, finishing 2-for-4 with a triple, a homer, and two runs scored.

McNeillie had an impressive outing out of the bullpen, throwing three-plus innings of one-run ball with three strikeouts.

Despite the loss, the Gators remain a strong force at home, with an impressive 15-2 record at Condron Family Ballpark this season.

Florida, now 195-117-2 all-time against Georgia, will look to even the series on Saturday at 12 p.m. on SEC Network.
