The Florida Gators capped their 2024 football season with an emphatic 33-8 victory over the Tulane Green Wave in the Gasparilla Bowl at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.

With this win, the Gators secured their eighth victory of the year, the most in four seasons, and extended their longest win streak since 2020.

The team’s impressive turnaround from a 1-2 start has infused optimism for the program under third-year head coach Billy Napier.

Freshman quarterback DJ Lagway, the Gasparilla Bowl MVP, led the charge with 305 passing yards and a crucial second-half touchdown.

Lagway completed 22 of 35 attempts, setting a bowl record for yardage.

While his two first-half interceptions left room for improvement, his composure and playmaking ability stood out, cementing his status as a cornerstone for Florida’s future.

Lagway’s 7-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tony Livingston in the third quarter ignited a 27-point surge that turned a close contest into a rout.

His record-breaking performance underscores his potential, and with an offseason to fine-tune his skills, Gator Nation has much to look forward to.

Though Lagway’s heroics made headlines, it was Florida's defense that stole the show.

The unit, led by Ron Roberts after the departure of co-coordinator Austin Armstrong, silenced Tulane’s high-powered offense, which had averaged 37.2 points per game during the regular season.

The Gators forced three interceptions, held Tulane to a season-low 194 total yards, and limited the Green Wave’s offense to just eight points.

Defensive back Dijon Johnson’s tipped pass, intercepted by walk-on Alfonzo Allen Jr., set the stage for Florida’s first touchdown and shifted the game’s momentum decisively.

Junior kicker Trey Smack was instrumental, nailing four field goals from 34, 44, 24, and 30 yards.

His consistent performance provided early stability for the Gators, who struggled to finish drives in the first half.

On the ground, the Gators amassed 224 rushing yards, highlighted by true freshman KD Daniels’ 27-yard scoop-and-score touchdown and walk-on tailback Anthony Rubio’s late-game 9-yard score.

Even defensive tackle Desmond Watson got involved, paving the way in a memorable offensive cameo during his final collegiate game.

The Gators’ season-ending surge is reminiscent of their 2019 campaign, which concluded with an Orange Bowl victory.

However, the current team boasts an off-field edge in recruiting, with a top-10 class expected to finalize soon.

Over their last four games, the Gators’ defense has dominated, tallying 38 tackles-for-loss, 19 sacks, 13 turnovers, and allowing just 13 points per game.

Meanwhile, Lagway’s leadership has been pivotal, with Florida boasting a 6-0 record in games he started and finished.

The transfer portal remains a key focus as the Gators aim to bolster their roster before the December 28 deadline.

With a top-tier recruiting class and a robust offseason conditioning program, anticipation is building for the Gators' 2025 campaign and spring practices.
