The University of Florida Gators wrapped up their regular season with a resounding 31-11 victory over archrivals Florida State, securing a 7-5 record and their first winning season under head coach Billy Napier.
With a berth in the Gasparilla Bowl against the Tulane Green Wave on December 20 and a promising offseason ahead, the Gators are poised to build momentum heading into the 2025 season.
The Gators demonstrated significant improvement in Napier’s third year, achieving their first winning season since 2019.
"We played all the good teams, we know what they look like,” Napier said in a postgame conference. “I’m excited, we’re gonna get to play one more time. That’s all we can control."
The regular season culminated in a commanding 31-11 victory over archrival Florida State, showcasing the team's development and resilience.
Freshman quarterback DJ Lagway has been instrumental in Florida's offensive resurgence, leading the team to a 5-1 record in his six starts.
Lagway's capabilities have invigorated the Gators' offense, providing a solid foundation for future success.
Defensively, Florida has been formidable, with edge rusher Jack Pyburn and the defensive front setting the tone with consistent pressure, while the secondary has improved as the season progressed.
On Friday, Florida will face a Tulane team (9-4) that has become one of the most competitive programs in recent years.
Tulane will feature a balanced offense led by quarterback Ty Thompson.
The Green Wave defense, ranked among the top in the AAC, will pose a challenge for Lagway and the Gators’ offense.
The matchup provides Florida with an opportunity to measure themselves against a disciplined and motivated opponent.
For the Gators, it’s not just about winning but also proving they can handle high-pressure games against tough competition.
As the transfer portal opened on December 4, Napier and his staff have already begun working to address key needs on the roster.
Florida is targeting experienced pass-catchers to complement Lagway’s growing skillset and provide the young quarterback with more reliable weapons.
Bolstering depth and versatility up front remains a priority after injuries tested the unit throughout the season.
While the pass rush has been a strength, Florida is looking to add talent and depth in the secondary to solidify its defense.
Napier has emphasized retention through NIL deals, particularly for impact players like Pyburn and standout receivers Marcus Burke and Chimere Dike.
Florida’s ability to keep key contributors while attracting talent through the portal will set the stage for 2025.
A win in the Gasparilla Bowl would give Florida its first bowl victory since 2019 and validate the progress made under Napier.
More importantly, it would send a strong message heading into the offseason: the Gators are on the rise.
With Lagway returning for his sophomore season and a top-10 recruiting class incoming, the Gators are positioning themselves to challenge for the SEC East in 2025.
The defense, led by a core of young pass rushers, will aim to build on its late-season dominance, while the offense looks to become more explosive with added depth at key positions.
Kickoff for the Gasparilla Bowl is set for December 20 at 3:30 p.m. and will air on ESPN2.
Gators fans will be watching closely as Florida aims to cap off 2024 with a victory and take another step toward a brighter future.
"I wouldn’t bet against us, that’s what I would say," said Napier.
