The Florida Gators are one win away from capturing the NCAA Championship after a thrilling 79-73 victory over Auburn in the Final Four on Saturday night.

The Gators have now won five consecutive games in the NCAA Tournament, and with only one more victory needed, the national title is within their grasp.

The game, played in front of a sold-out crowd at the Alamodome, saw Florida overcome a halftime deficit of 46-38.

Senior guard Walter Clayton Jr. was the star of the night, scoring a game-high 34 points.

Clayton, who was nothing short of sensational, made 11 of 18 field goals, including 5 of 8 from beyond the arc, with 20 of those points coming in the second half.

In addition to Clayton’s heroics, guard Alijah Martin contributed 17 points, and sophomore Thomas Haugh chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds.

The win marked Florida’s 11th straight victory, as they continue to roll through the tournament.

Auburn, led by SEC Player of the Year Johni Broome, wasn’t going to go down without a fight.

After Florida fell behind 49-40 early in the second half, the Gators exploded on an 11-0 run to take their first lead of the game.

Despite a strong push from the Tigers, including 18 points from Chad Baker-Mazara, who hit 4 of 7 from three-point range, Florida never relinquished their advantage.

With the score tied at 57-all midway through the second half, Martin seized the moment, picking off a steal and dunking it home to put the Gators up by two.

But Martin wasn’t finished.

After Auburn briefly regained the lead, Martin’s thunderous dunk over two Auburn defenders gave Florida a 66-63 lead with 5:27 remaining.

The Tigers would fight to stay in the game, getting as close as one point on two separate occasions late, but Florida held strong to secure the victory.

The win is a significant milestone for Florida basketball.

This marks the Gators' sixth trip to the Final Four and their fourth appearance in the national championship game.

Florida is 2-1 all-time in the title game, having won back-to-back championships in 2006 and 2007, with their only loss coming to Michigan State in 2000.

Walter Clayton Jr.’s performance has already etched his name into NCAA Tournament history.

His 34-point outing against Auburn, combined with his 30-point performance in the Elite Eight win over Texas Tech, makes him the first player since Larry Bird in 1979 to score 30 or more points in both the Elite Eight and Final Four of the same tournament.

Clayton’s 34 points also set a new program record for the most points scored in a Final Four game, surpassing Udonis Haslem’s 27 points in the 2000 national championship game against Michigan State.

His total of 702 points this season has broken Florida’s 55-year-old single-season scoring record, previously held by Andy Owens, who scored 676 points during the 1969-70 season.

Clayton also set a new school record for points in a single NCAA Tournament, with 123, surpassing Joakim Noah’s 97 points in the 2006 tournament.

With their victory over Auburn, the Gators are one step away from adding another championship banner to their storied history.

Florida will now turn their attention to Monday night, where they will face Houston in the national championship after the Cougars edged out Duke in the final minutes of their game.
