The Atlanta Braves were narrowly edged out 1-0 by the San Diego Padres on Saturday, suffering their third consecutive loss in the four-game series.
The Braves had opportunities but couldn’t break through as the Padres capitalized on a key moment in the seventh inning to secure the win.
Pinch-hitter Yuli Gurriel came through in the clutch with a two-out single in the seventh, scoring Jake Cronenworth, who was aboard after an unusual ground-rule double.
Cronenworth’s liner struck Braves reliever Aaron Bummer on the bottom of his right foot, causing the ball to ricochet into the Braves' dugout.
He advanced to second on the play, and after Bummer intentionally walked Xander Bogaerts, Daysbel Hernández entered in relief.
Hernández would allow the decisive hit as Gurriel drove a single to left field, bringing in Cronenworth for the only run of the game.
The Braves’ pitching staff, led by starter Spencer Schwellenbach, was impressive despite the loss.
Schwellenbach threw six shutout innings, allowing only one hit, while striking out four and walking one.
His performance kept the Braves in the game, but they were unable to get the timely hits needed to back up his stellar outing.
Schwellenbach's pitching performance was a bright spot for Atlanta, but the lack of offensive support proved costly.
San Diego’s starter, Randy Vásquez, also kept the Braves off the scoreboard.
Vásquez threw six shutout innings, giving up four hits, while striking out five and walking two.
Despite the strong pitching from both sides, it was the Padres who made the most of their limited opportunities in the late innings.
In the fourth inning, the Braves threatened with runners on first and second and just one out, but a crucial 4-5-6 double play turned by the Padres snuffed out the threat.
Cronenworth, who was playing second base, made a key defensive play by fielding Michael Harris II’s blooper, throwing to Manny Machado, who tagged Marcell Ozuna and quickly fired to shortstop Xander Bogaerts to force Ozzie Albies at second.
The Padres’ defense proved to be just as sharp as their pitching.
On a positive note for Atlanta, rookie Drake Baldwin recorded his first Major League hit.
After starting the series 0-for-7, Baldwin drove an opposite-field single to left field in the second inning, showing some resilience in his debut.
His hit was a small bright spot in what was otherwise a frustrating day for the Braves' offense.
The Padres have now won three straight games in the series, which also served as a rematch of last season's wild-card playoff.
The Padres swept the Braves 2-0 in that series and have continued to dominate this matchup.
The series finale will see RHP AJ Smith-Shawver take the mound for Atlanta on Sunday, hoping to stop the Padres’ momentum.
He will face off against Padres RHP Nick Pivetta, as the Braves look to avoid a four-game sweep and regroup after a tough stretch.
